What is politicized somatics?

What are the skills we need to resist oppression and move towards the world we long for?

How is change & transformation centered in the body?

We navigate the world the best we can, but often sacrifice our fullness for safety, dignity, or belonging. We may shrink ourselves, or harden ourselves, or vacate ourselves, to fit into social roles and norms. Somatics allows us to become more aware of these sub-conscious strategies and stories and allows us to practice coming back into our bodies so that we can come back into connection.

We practice cultivating new skills and possibilities so we can live in deeper alignment with our values and collectively create the world we want.

More on politicized somatics and the lineage we are teaching from here.

FAQs

Who is this for?

This is for anyone who wants to practice increasing their emotional and relational capacity through embodied practice. It is intended for organizers, activists, artists, care-workers, and change-makers of all kinds to cultivate these skills for the sake of increased resilience under the current administration’s attacks on trans lives, people of color, immigrants, and the working class. No previous experience in somatics is necessary.

Do I have to sign up for all 4 sessions?

It is ideal to come to all 4 sessions, as the classes will build on each other, but it is not required. There is a discount if you sign up for all 4, but you are welcome to come to as many as you want.

Is this trauma healing work?

Somatics is known for its effectiveness at healing trauma, but that is not a focus of this course. Though there will be therapeutic value in attending these classes, it is not a therapy group and is not an adequate substitute for therapy. The focus is on cultivating new skills and capacities through somatic awareness and practice.

How much does it cost?

$50 per 2 hour session, or $150 for the whole 4 session series. Pre-registration is required to reserve your spot.

Are there scholarships?

Yes. There are 2 scholarship spots available at a discounted rate of $15 per session. Scholarships are only available to those who can attend all 4 sessions. Apply for a scholarship here.
